Just read this article and thought it was worth discussing:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/may/30/alqaida.terrorism

This echos Jonathan Powell's views on negotiating with terrorists.

Is negotiating with al Qaeda really going to work? I have my doubts about just how 'new' this terrorism is, but it is obvious that al Qaeda is not the same as the IRA. Fundamentally, the IRA had limited aims that were political. Religion may have played some role, but nowhere near the level seen from Islamic extremists.

I find it disturbing that the frontrunner to be the next commissioner of the Metropolitan police is lumping all terrorist groups together, but he is right that terrorism cannot simply be policed out.

Any thoughts?

Hello Everybody,
Was it the arrest of an Opposition spokesman, Damian Green,
by the anti-terrorist police for doing little more than embarrassing the government?

Hi e_spary,
we should not negotiated with Al-Queda. I think Al-Queda do not believe in any religion and they are terrorists while IRA had limited aims that were political.
